How do you determine when to flip the meat if you just do it once? "Halfway through" is the accurate answer, but it depends on the cut,

thickness, and desired cook temperature (as explained by Allen Brothers).Thankfully, you can estimate this by feel without a timer.

Chandler tells The Kitchn that, like pan-searing, the steak is ready to flip when it releases easily from the grill.

Grab the meat with grill tongs and lift it. Flip if it lifts without sticking!

Chandler recommends flipping meat using tongs rather than a grill fork to avoid losing moisture.

"If you pierce the flesh, you kill the pork," says Mighty Quinn's barbecue chef Hugh Mangum to CNBC.
